I've definitely changed from when I first started drawing. I only wanted to draw manga, because it is fun and because I loved the art style. But then later along the line I got a lot of advice that said that was the wrong approach: I should learn to draw in the first place. Anatomy, proportion, perspective, composition, e.t.c I agree that these skills are valid to drawing any sort of manga, but it sort of made me feel embarrassed for getting inspired by manga and anime for art. My question is is it a bad thing to draw most of your references from other manga and anime or should one follow the proper approach to learning how to draw to be able to draw manga and anime?

I think it completely depends on your personal goals. When I first started drawing manga, all I really cared about was having fun, being able to draw fanart of my favorite characters, and being able to draw an original character every now and then. So, for me at that time, learning and referencing only manga style worked perfectly fine. However, the past few years, I've decided I want to earn money from my art so I needed to start being more serious about making my art correct in terms of technicality. That's why I've started studying the basics more than I used to... I'm still not studying them super carefully, I still use manga specific references a lot, but one day I'll start studying it more. So really, I personally think it just depends on your goals and what you want to achieve with your art.

I just want to make comics to be honest. While it would be awesome to get lots of likes for a beautifully constructed image I prefer making stories and the like.
Actually a secret dream is to get a web comic going... Sells stuff maybe somehow? Haha.
