1. Stolid actually XD The assonance in the sentence is awry isn't it? definition: not easily stirred or moved mentally; unemotional; impassive.
4 & 8. *ecd. I don't know why it did that. Looks perfectly fine in my files... Thanks for catching it ^^.
5 & 6. I think there's a few thoughts mixed in there I didn't italicize. Thanks.
7. Yeah. "Red Brick" inn is built with... weill, red brick. In reference to that, the atmosphere at the moment feel "crimson" or murderous.
9. Yeah, not wet. Ron splashed him with water to drench the explosives but it didn't reach the man's gun.
10. Thanks. Swords, pistols, and even wireless communication devices too apparently I tend to like that kind of environment. Or the opposite - modern world with swords... (i.e Final Fantasy) Thanks for reading and the review Lego! I hoped you got the gist of it. I actually don't know what the agreement was either :-). I look out for vague references to characters next time, and perhaps you'll find out soon how these characters got their skills XD.

A whole month and I'm ready to begin posting the next part of the bodyguard series. The release of this one will be every week instead of every 5 days. I hope. If you have any questions about the story, feel free to ask! Charred Life: Bodyguard Part Kate Chapter 2.1 "Oschelar? What about it?"
"Don't you know?" A foot-long stream of lace flashed by Kate's eyes. "That prince of theirs is under the most violent assaults from his own townsmen! It's so scary!"
"Is that so..." Kate glanced as red ribbons fluttered high into the air. Her eyebrows twitched.
"They say I shouldn't listen to those things because it might get to my head," the high-pitched voice piped on. "But I can get my ears on it anyway. Imagine that: Surrounded on all sides by burlesque men - " A chain of silver flew up. "And then at the most critical moment - I am rescued by a lovely young man who fights the rogues off single-handedly!"
Before the ornaments could land, a streak of gray snatched them. The female child with her hands raised to catch them started as the boots of the other clomped loudly to the ground. Her wide but unfazed gray eyes regarded the tall woman before her blankly.
Standing at five feet, eight inches, Kate was a height to be reckoned with. Her shoulder length golden blond hair flowed loosely about her head, falling over one eye. The most distinguishing feature about her at the moment was the outfit of stone gray donning her, consisting of partially metal boots and tough gray jeans, metal faulds, a gray shirt beneath a tunic of chain mail, over which she had thrown over a cloak.
Kate had found out herself it was very distinguishable because the guards at the gate had almost stopped her for wearing them. What a pain. Luckily she had the royal invitation.
"One! That's the situation we're supposed to avoid the most and Two! WVER PUT THAT NOTION INTO YOUR HEAD MUST'VE BEEN AN ID - "
"Ah! Foul language prohibited! Foul foul!" The young girl crossed her hands in an 'X', frowning.
Kate pursed her lips, blue eyes narrowed. The figure before her should've been upsetting. Storybook brain adorned with curly brown hair and dressed in a billowy frilly gown of vain red. It was a soft red at least, and Kate could not be upset because she wasn't allowed to be.
"My apologies, your highness." Kate bowed, handing the silver necklace to the girl.
A smile blossomed onto the young face. "It's okay, Kate. You're learning anyhow. Nanny says as long as we acknowledge our shortcomings we need not be sour." The girl hopped over to the stool in front of the broad dressing table. "Come fix the back of my hair."
"Still, fairy tales are fairy tales for a reason." Kate took a wide-toothed comb, running it gently down the twin-tails set high on her charge's well rounded head. "Technically, I wouldn't think the boy would be still handsome after running in the last moment to save you. He'd probably be winded and sweaty - "
"That's fine, Kate." The girl tossed her curls to see the effect in the mirror. "I'll have the maid tidy this all up. Let us depart to the Great Hall, my dear bodyguard."
Kate tightened the girth of her dagger belt. "As you wish, Lyric."
"Don't forget the honorific."
"Of course, your highness."

Guess what? I forgot to post this yesterday.... Better late than never though. XD ~ Chapter 2.2 Engarden. The kingdom bearing the flower emblem and hosting the parties of frivolity, vanity, and high social class. Ruled by the Hildegarden Family, king, queen, and the princess, who was the charm of the kingdom.
"Seriously though, this place looks like the volcano's released most of its energy already... you can expect something bad to happen next man..." Kate strolled behind the skipping lass in the wide hall empty of people, scanning the tapestries lined on the wall. "Miss Lyric, where are we going?"
"'Miss Lyric'! I like that!" Lyric stopped, swirling to face Kate. "Yes, I will permit you to address me as such. We are going to see Mama and Papa. You have not yet been introduced."
"Great, formalities..." Kate muttered, straightening her cloak. The chain mail beneath clinked. She was suddenly reminded of the other clothes choices she could've picked. "...the other two were lucky, kuh..."
"Lady Kate - "
"I'm not a Lady."
"What?! Are you a man?!"
"NO. No, no. I meant I don't have that title."
"Hm, well that matters not. You are a 'lady'." Lyric hop-stepped to Kate's strides. "Since you are to meet my royal parents, I expect that you will not embarrass me? I requested of your rank and type myself. I would be heartily disappointed if they deemed you unfit and dismissed you."
Kate glanced quizzically at the girl. "Heartily disappointed - oh, so you think I'm unfit, m'lady?"
Lyric's eyes widened. "That was not my meaning, Kate. I fancy you very much as you are, however your uncouth behaviour may be off putting to many a courtier here. Especially as you are a foreigner, plebeian, and female mercenary - "
"Oh, I'm an alien, commoner, female mercenary..."
" - I would prefer no unsettling rumours to circulate before people come to acknowledge your abilities."
Kate attempted to suppress a smirk. "Miss Lyric, you have not seen what I can do yet either."
Lyric stared sternly up with those large eyes. "I already have full confidence in you."
Kate eyed her back without the smile. "Is that so?"
"50% of that trust is extracted from the fact that you are female."
"Was that female part something you 'got your ears on'?"
"No, that was something I caught by 'accident'. But it is no matter. People see me as a child after all."
YOU ARE STILL A KID. Kate shook her head contemplatively. But....it's okay, I guess.
"10% is women intuition," Lyric continued, face serious. "And 40% is from your skill in handling my hair."
Kate paused, almost nodding, but did a double take. "What - could you repeat that, m'lady?!"
But Lyric was already few steps ahead. "It's reassuring that even if we're on the run, you can dress my hair so that if my hero appears, he will not find me unpleasant."
Kate halted instantly, gaping. I TAKE THAT BACK. After all that, you really are still a kid!! Mental face palm occurring, Kate ran her eyes over the inner buttresses, the stone layout. She frowned.
"Are you coming, Miss Woodward?"
And do I have to get used to this ordering me around? Kate stepped forward. "Coming..."

Chapter 2.3 Five days ago, Kate might've been still sitting in her comfy bedroom, maybe playing with a couple of other bored kids. Five days ago, a certain person decided to burst their holiday bubble with a spear called 'work'.
Why did I have to come here again?! screamed the temper of the tall blonde garbed in a Middle Ages chain mail armour cloak-like thing. Why am I always stuck with such abnormal kids?!
"It's a woman?!"
"Princess Kate's escort is a lady?"
"Oh my!"
Whispers, murmurs, gasps, grumbles...
Kate kept her eyes from twitching as the little girl daintily went forward into the Great Hall, receiving the smiles of the courtiers with a tight nod, those same people eyeing the armed female accompanying their dainty flower with a wariness as to thorns.
Alright, if it isn't just the kid - how am I the only one that gets placed in these situations?! CAN I KILL YOU KINAN?! Kate looked up calmly towards the couple seated at the end of the long fuzzy carpet. The male stood while the female sat and the little girl stopped at the bottom of the semi-circular steps, curtseying.
"Mama, Papa." Lyric held her hands poised before her, addressing the couple. "I have come to introduce my newly installed escort to you. She is the one I requested from Empyte Emblem Guild." Lyric stepped to the side, motioning.
Huh, interesting relationship these three present. Kate stepped forward, face composed and formal. She knelt onto one knee, bowing her head low. "Greetings, my king and my queen, I am Kate of Woodward from Emptye Emblem Guild, come on request of Princess Lyric to become her escort." She paused. The stoic feel in the air before her had not alleviated its scrutiny. She smiled and her legs shifted. The movement seemed to darken the air as more muttering sounded.
Kate stood, looking up directly at the grave couple. "Although that's what the letter of request required of me, I can promise nothing but what I am capable of. I am aware of what being a female has impressed on the public..." Tenser. The air became certainly more tense. "But since you took the risk of allowing Miss Lyric such an impressive person..." Kate met their unwavering stares equally in a cool glare. "Don't doubt me."
"We have avoided a greater risk in selecting your kind, Miss Woodward," the lady spoke. Her voice was slender and unprovoked as she smiled gently. "Do not worry."
Lyric clasped her hands together. "Oh mama! While Miss Woodward is like this now - "
What do you mean by that?! This is why I hate medieval settings... Kate winced as the child spoke up.
" - what she means is that even as we have spent the time to find and pay for a suitable escort, she has also had to take the time to even travel here herself - so she cannot waste her role either!"
Kate mumbled inaudibly, "Include the time I spent training to learn this skill. Years, man, years. And heck, it wasn't easy. For the life of me it has occupied, it was damn hard."
Now the lord was smiling. "Of course, we will not suffer your time poorly here. My wife and I are very grateful for your presence. I hope Miss Woodward has not disappointed you, my dear Lyric?"
"Oh papa!" Lyric's smile drew the attention of the awed courtiers. "You will not believe - you see how my hair is done up today?"
Gosh, don't bring that up in a formal court. Embarrassing... Kate groaned inwardly.
"Miss Woodward is the executor of it."
Lyric's mother's eyes widened. "My, Lyric, it is just like how Apple does it!"
"Isn't it so like?" Lyric beamed.
Whispers, gasps, laughter, exclamations....
Kate blinked, nullifying an eye twitch. So easily impressed, these people. Lyric now curtseyed to her parents, stepping back down the aisle, and Kate followed. It was hard to tell if they preferred a serious escort, or a smiling one, these people.
Huh, they would probably think I'm not serious about my job if I smiled. But look down on me as a girl if I didn't... Not that this is anything new...
Lyric smiled at the doorkeeper. Kate blinked, an unconsciously amused smile edged onto her face.
"I hope you can do more than fix hair," the same doorkeeper muttered as Kate passed through.
HA. Can you be any lesser for criticizing the royal highnesses'... Kate's smirk froze and dropped. Frills and laces were halted in front of her. "My lady Lyric?"
The little girl turned around slowly. They flinched to see her eyes sharp and expression solemn. Lyric regarded the doorkeeper gravely, the same look of her parents on her face. "Osweld," the chill of her tone caused the man to shiver. "Do you doubt my escort's ability to protect me?"
Osweld stiffened. "Pardon me, you highness. I only desire to protect you as much - "
Kate quickly moved aside as Lyric strode back into the Great Hall. "Miss..."
"Pardon for my intrusion, mama, papa," the girl's voice rang out, silencing the court.
"Oi oi..." Kate watched, exasperated. "There's no need to go that far."
"Yes, dear Lyric," the father, the king responded.
Lyric came forward further, tones clear and decisive. "It doesn't appear that everyone is in agreement that Miss Woodward is suited as my escort. I would like to forward a proposal, if that is not prohibited?"
Kate resisted the urge to facepalm. Don't Lyric! It's okay!!
"What would such a proposal be, my love?" the mother, the queen, gently asked.
Lyric pulled herself up. "That until Miss Woodward has proven herself a worthy escort, no one may voice their doubts, or they will have to answer to me and face Miss Woodward on a one-on-one duel where the victor will be appointed as my proven escort."
Ahh, she did it!! Kate pressed her had to her head, Too many fairy tales, that's what.
The murmur in the hall ecd into the outer corridor. Osweld had gone pale, glaring at Kate.
"Princess Lyric is becoming such a young woman every day," a nearby courtier fantasized instead.
SHE'S TWELVE. THAT'S A DANGEROUS AGE. Kate stepped forward into the hall, mentally groaning. But I gotta give it to her... she's eloquent.
The crowd shushed on her entry. Kate stopped by the girl, whose eyes focused on the couple ahead. Lyric spoke to her without turning. "You only have to do your part, Kate."
"Willingly, your highness."
The king came down a step... and the multitudes fell quiet.
"Miss Woodward, have you anything to say to this?"
"No, your majesty." I was gonna prove myself anyway?! People judging so quickly.
The king regarded her steadily. He then looked around at the court. "So be it. As Princess Lyric has declared, any person and individual who believes him or herself better fit to be her escort must face Miss Kate Woodward in a duel to prove their worth as an escort."
"Thank you, father." Lyric curtseyed low. "Excuse us then. Come, Miss Woodward."
Kate turned and followed her charge wordlessly out. Osweld did not look up as they passed, and the silence of the great hall was shut in behind the doors.
Court proceedings are so tedious... kind of why I left home... Kate sighed inwardly.

Chapter 2.4 The maid had already tidied the room it seemed, when the two returned. Lyric attended to her dresser immediately. Kate eyed her face which had become blank as soon as they entered.
"My hair... Kate..." Lyric said quietly. "Of course." Kate laid aside her dagger belt as the girl sat herself. The twin tails came loose. "Just as is?" "For now." Lyric undid her jewelry as well. She paused as her expression became further doleful. "And you may use your language, for a while." Kate ran the comb through the wavy hair again. Lyric suddenly sighed and Kate flinched. "Hey, it's alright." "I - " Lyric stiffened. "... do you think?" "Kid." Kate clapped her hands on the small shoulders, peering down at the frowning face. "We're hearing none of that, okay? You just said those things, and they're valid. Don't doubt me." Lyric turned on the stool abruptly. "But - I didn't consult with you first - " Kate redirected her forward. "It's o-kay. And that means a lot in my 'language'." "Don't you feel upset?!" Kate snorted. "Nah, this isn't bad." She set the comb down. "Now, I dunno if you'll get this, but a rule we have at the Guild is - " Lyric looked full up at her. " 'Once it's done, it's done. And whatever follows, it happens.' " "That sounds queer." "Console yourself then, kid." Kate moved towards the back room where the princess' sleeping chambers were. Lyric sat herself on the mahogany poster bed while Kate seated herself on a high stool beside it. "It's what we often do. Although it's more like getting at ourselves and then determining to do better." Lyric folded her hands. "Why should you be upset at yourself?" Kate laughed, "Weren't you doing just that a second ago?" Lyric frowned thoughtfully. "I suppose... I thought maybe... that I hadn't done the right thing... or maybe I didn't do it well enough." "Yeah, it's sorta like that, but the opposite. We know what we should've done, and could see it so well after, but we didn't then, so we beat ourselves up over it." "That is harsh." Lyric peered at the other in scrutiny. "It's common." Kate waved a dismissive hand. Lyric looked down at her hands silently. Kate held a tired gaze on the girl, crossing her legs and resting her head in her palm. The twin tails perhaps did look better on the princess. I wonder if the others are having a hard time, Kate closed her eyes. What is the problem with this kingdom anyway? Is Lyric being targeted? Are there political errors? Impending treason? Darn, I hope my time won't be boring here... "So, are you..." Lyric looked up, attentive. "Yes?" Kate opened her eyes lazily. "You going to determine to do better after this?" Lyric's eyes enlarged with interest. "Why..." "Didn't your nanny say to acknowledge your shortcomings and get over them?" "Nanny..." Lyric sat straight, face grave. "You're right, Kate. I will strive to elevate myself here on." "Don't tell that to me..." Kate snorted. "'Strive' - rich people, huh." She smiled. "Good then. And if you don't mind, may I advise your majesty to rest for a while? You are to attend the Engarden Festival in an hour (aka Public Relations Event) and a half hour respite won't hurt after your verbal exertion this morning." Lyric's brow lifted. "I really do marvel at your vocabulary, Miss Woodward. Do all plebeian converse alternatively as well?" Kate slid off her seat to help the girl out of her frills. "No, well, only when we want - need - have - to." Lyric hopped onto the bed in her white chemise. "Continue doing it. It is amusing." "I'll be blamed for bad influence..." Kate muttered, covering Lyric with the light blanket. Her eyes observed the girl's eyes close as the little body snuggled in. She glanced at the clock, beginning to draw her hands away, when cold skin touched hers. "Miss Woodward, I don't mean to impose." Those great gray eyes peeked up, the hand on Kate's. "But will you accommodate to rest with me till I fall asleep? Nanny used to all the time." HAH?! Kate glanced at her armour. "I don't believe it is proper, my lady. And uh, the metal is cold." "It is of no matter. Just remove your footwear." You're kidding, Kate pushed her boots off. But is this a royal command?! "Till you fall asleep then." She grasped the small hand and carefully climbed onto the surprisingly soft comforter, mouth screwing as she sunk dangerously into it. Lyric shifted over slightly as the older girl lowered beside her. Kate blinked, seeing the girl's eyes up close, and frowned at the fingers clasping hers back "Thank you," Lyric mumbled, seemingly falling into rest. Already?! Kate controlled her breathing, not really wanting to, grateful for the gap holding hands gave. This is so awkward... As long as she's happy. She stared at the relaxed face across from her. The fingers beneath hers weren't gripping as hard anymore. Wait a little more... She closed her eyes.
~
Silence pervaded the stone corridors... but for a moment. The urgent yet deliberate stride of stepping feet ecd softly in the empty hallways, growing as it approached the top of a flight of stairs and moving quickly to the only door in the passage. Garbed in brown and hooded, the figure glanced at the surroundings. A throwing back of the cowl revealed a young man of rugged appearances. He approached the door, eyes flitting about him. Before he could raise his hand to knock, the door had swung open. He started in surprise. "May I help you?" Therein stood the blond armed female appointed as the room's occupant's bodyguard. "Miss Woodward...?" The young man stiffened. "Her highness is taking a respite right now." The nervous tone in the mild-toned voice eased off instantly. More at ease the man stepped closer and his voice dropped low. “I shall not be long. My name is Gareth. I have come with a message from His Majesty.”
Blue eyes regarded him calmly. "From His Majesty...?" A soothing tone. "...Please, take another breath. You are unsettled.... what is wrong?"
Gareth’s hands fumbled under his cloak. He handed her a small folded white card.

Chapter 2.5 The door shut after the man. And the girl paused... she looked down at the card and flipped it over twice, checking the back and front – opened it.
“Ehh, a suspected hidden unrest within the Kingdom of Engarden? Exciting~” Looking up, she set her steps directed to the back chamber. She opened the door... and looked in on the two figures resting on the bed. She smiled.
- - -
"Don't move." Kate's eyes shot open glaring. Her hand would've whipped out her weapons... had not Lyric's hand been holding hers. Not that she needed to. "Aww~ that really did wake you up." Silvery jesting tones fell from above. Kate stared unimpressed up at the figure hanging half out of the bed canopy. The princess sleeping beside her in the middle of the day, the situation couldn't have been more awkward. Wait - what was she doing in bed anyway?! "And it is true you turn into a zombie the first 5 minutes of your waking time." The features of a dark-haired girl suddenly became recognizable. "You should reward me later~ A bodyguard should never sleep on the job. I wonder what your head might've looked like without your body, na~?" Huh? Did she have a partner in this job? What job was this again? "Keyden...." Kate winced, as if the thing clicking into her brain hurt. "... KEYDEN - !!" "Shh~" A cold hand pressed down on her mouth. "Don't wake her. She can't know about this." The other hand tucked a white paper between Kate and Lyric's hands. "Message from the boss~" "Then pick a more convenient time and place you!!" Kate whipped the card away frantically. "I just wanted to see if your sleeping myths were true~" The shadow double snickered, morphed back into the canopy. "Don't worry, I won't tell anyone~ As you people say, 'better now than never', hehe." "What are you talking about, myths my foot..." Kate scowled as the shadow disappeared in a puddle of black that diminished into nothing after her. Then she turned to the detailed card. "..." A well practiced smirk appeared on her face. She laid back smiling. "Finally... the action starts."
- - -
“Wait, what does this mean…?” Kiaut rubbed her eyes, regarding the card groggily. No doubt it was from their boss, Kinan. People of this world wouldn’t have stationary of this quality. In fact, the message appeared to be computer typed. “Is this really from King Jacinth…?” She read the words over once again. [There lies a hidden unrest within the kingdom. I cannot act or they shall grow suspicious and move quickly. Unroot the source. Your guildmaster says you are capable of this. -Jacinth] “Well I wouldn’t deny that but…” Kiaut flipped the card over again. “… there’s not other info that this??” No other hint of what that unrest was. No clear mention of who ‘they’ were. Spies perhaps, stirring up the kingdom. Discontent persons within the kingdom. Who had given Jacinth these reports? Or had he spotted it himself? “He doesn’t go out that much though, right?” Kiaut walked slowly around the table, hand on chin. She groaned and frowned. “But then he says the ‘kingdom’. That would mean his people, right?”Kiaut paused. “Ugh, this is why I never joined the intelligence department – gr!” She flung the card onto the table.
“Considering he has monarchy duties to attend to everyday….” The young woman sat on the edge of the table. “What does he look at? Shipments? Criminal offenses? They act as judges in these settings, don’t they?” Kiaut blinked once and bounced to her feet. “Ahah! Then, it must be one of his officials or something. Like one handling his affairs.” She dropped back and covered her face with her hand. “No… that doesn’t fit at all…Argh!” Standing erect, the bodyguard swept her eyes over the princess’ room, glancing once at the closed bedroom door. Then she picked up the card again.
“Keyden!” Kiaut barked, her voice resounding in the stony silence, then fading away quickly. She waited. The dark substance of thick black matter appeared from beneath the table. It began as an amorphous lump, then crawled rapidly out as it grew, elongating upwards into the semblance of a figure that was her height. Once it had formed, the substance suddenly hardened and receded into a form that was the dark-haired, gray-skinned being she knew as a Shadow. It occurred in flat seconds and voice sounded immediately after. “That was fast, Kiaut.” Keyden snickered, voice melodious and youthful “Well there’s no time to lose. I don’t see why leaders take so long to make obvious decisions sometimes.” The blonde handed the card to her shadow double. “You’ve read it.” “I did,” Keyden simpered, dark eyes squinting slyly as she took the card. “Did you need me for something~?” Kiaut smirked. “What do you think of the situation?” Keyden tipped her head up, placing a slender finger on her bottom lip. “Hmm. It’s pretty simple. Usually treasonous story a kingdom like this experiences once in a while hehe.” She grinned. “Often it’s a sign for a change, don’t you think?” “Not my call to make.” Kiaut raised an eyebrow at her partner. Keyden tilted her back even more, regarding Kiaut from the bottom of her eyes. “Would you like the usual…?” A slow smile stretched across her face. Kiaut crossed her arms. “Whatever works for you. Just don’t mess up, and give me the info I want. Got it?” “Aww, so coarse and hollow~” Keyden dropped her head with a playful smile, rocking on her heels. She giggled and fell into a crouch, eyes peering upward like a hungry animal. Kiaut stepped back. Keyden sprung up with a whirl. If there was such thing as a light show in negative colours, this was the moment. Tendrils of the black substance whirled around the being, adding to what was already on herself. The colours of her clothes shifted, her hair shortened, and with a loud gurgling, the female halted after one swift spin, different than what she looked before. Now, she looked exactly like Kiaut. Kiaut glanced up and down the now doppelganger and sighed. “Wow, I look – I look – nevermind.” She waved the body double to the door. “I’m counting on you, Keyden.” “Of course~ that’s what partners are for.” Keyden’s voice had altered as well. Except for the creepy smile plastered on the shadows face, Keyden look, sounded, and acted as the bodyguard. Then that gesture faded away into a stern look and the female clicked her tongue as she shut the door abruptly behind her. Kiaut closed her eyes. “Get me the info I want…” she murmured. Opening her eyes, she exposed sharp blue irises. “And let’s get this party started.”

I didn't update this last Saturday. I was actually in the midst of a driving course and forgot. There are still quite a few tasks for this month that'll hinder me from writing stories for a while, but I hope after that I can proceed with regular updates.
