She was crying.
Takahashi looked at the girl sitting under the sakura tree and crying and thought it was a bit embarrasing.
She had only stood still for a moment and rubbed at her eyes, and one could only tell by the way her small shoulders shook, but she was crying for sure. Even as the rest of the students went about their day, there were bound to be a few people who noticed, but none would stop.
There would only be distant action: A teacher calling her into an office maybe for some vague questions, or some harsh gossiping that would make her school life even more difficult than it already was.
The thing is, Takahashi knew the way the world worked. Money and skill dictated action. Yes, things were as tough and obvious as the mathematics that he studied hard in. The world did not bow down to someone with a good sense of morals or champion justice at the molecular level. Sometimes a girl crying under sakura trees was just a girl who lost control of their emotions and nothing more special than that would happen. This was not the start of a romantic story where the boy comforts the girl and finds love, nor would it even be the scandal of the week. The world had much more interesting things than that.
And yet, he still walked over to her and put a hand on her shoulder.
"Hello." Takahashi planned to lie that he was asking for directions, just to have her think of something else so that he could move on to his life, but when he saw her all his calculated thoughts ended. She was just so sad, and so, so precious. This was Tomoya he knew: The warm hearted student president of class 2A that no deliquent had the heart to be troublesome to. People felt so much for her that she needn't speak more than three sentences before they nodded and went to their assigned tasks and duties. She was also very hard to approach. So people respected her, but did not try to engage her.
Takahashi was already breaking a rule by doing this.
"Are you okay?" He asked instead. The tears in her eyes shocked him. But he felt an almost raw instict to know what was wrong. To try to help. To try to solve it.
"I'm hungry." She said. Takahashi was taken aback, but even after that she leaned onto him and put her hands on his shoulders. She began to pant heavily.
"I'm so... Hungry... And don't care anymore."
"W-what... What do you mean?" He was well aware of how awkard this looked. What was she doing?
There was a pause, and her breathing slowed down to a comfortable regular tone, "Do you know what Kitsune are? They live for millenia... I've... I've been alive for 300 years... These days I have to be more careful to hide my identity but... The weather... It's so nice... I played around too much... I just feel so hungry right now... And I don't know why I should hide myself anymore."
Well this was a complex thing.
Takahashi immediately translated her words as the ramblings of a very strange, perhaps insane (but still beautiful and timid) girl. He immediately decided to play her game. It was interesting in the first place to hear such things from Tomoya. On on the other hand, he had no real other answer to answer.
"Um... Okay?"
"I know you don't believe me, but I'm a demon fox from a famous family. And I try not to be like them, but I can't. And do you know the worst and best thing?" She looked up at Takahashi for a moment, "Come on, ask what 'the worst and the best thing' is"
Takahashi looked down at her. Now people were definitely looking, and he was feeling apprehensive. Something was just around the corner here. His answer would determine the rest of his life.
"What." Asked Takahashim "Is the 'worst and best thing?'"
She smiled sharp teeth. Literally. She had 8 long canines that stuck over the middle of her grin,
"It's that I can't control myself, and that I can sense that you were actually a really good person, despite your calculating thoughts."
Takahashi raised his eyebrows. He would probably have more thoughts than that if he had the choice, but she gave him no chance.
She bit into his throat. There was no pain, but there was a sense of strangeness as blood flowed out of him and his senses dulled.
The last thing Takahashi saw was the sakura trees. He heard his blood being sucked and felt his vision dimming, but the beautiful sight of the sakura leaves bathed in the summer sunlight only gave him a sense of undisturbed peace and happiness.
