Tensei ara Slime Datta Ken Genre: Fantasy. Adventure. Author(s):Fuse Artist(s):Kawakami Taiki
- - -
Notes: I was drawn in by the art, intrigued by the blue-haired character on the front...except soon found it is was more about the little blue slime (the blob above his head in the picture). A man who is stabbed by a robber while shoving his co-worker out of the way is suddenly reincarnated into a slime in another world.
The MC has a not so special but interesting personality and thinking that he retains in his new form. The next thing that intrigued me about the manga was the world the MC finds himself. It's kind of game-like in that one can gain skills as part of the world's mechanics though without being in a game. Even though the MC has been 'reduced' to a slime, he's capable of many things and it makes his adventures all the more interesting to see what he can do.
Not to mention the slime is kind of cute...
This one was a fun read. Relatively new there aren't many chapters out yet T_T...

Catharsis Genre(s):Fantasy Author(s):Ahniki Artist(s):Ahniki- - - Notes:
(I feel like I'm treading review territory. I said I wasn't going to review... but hey maybe I could learn to do this. Spoiler alerts if you haven't read this before.)
I at first thought that the Genre should include Horror, but once I got past and got used to some of the scary visuals this webtoon throws at you, I really liked the concept and the story, which centres more upon overcoming your fears than getting scared (the scary stuff is part of the fun XD).
The one thing I love about webtoon is the colours and comic format (the long pages are pretty cool). For this story, the MC (boy on the cover) can see sound in colours, the most prominent useful attribute of this being that he can distinguish everyone's voices from each other because they all have a different colour when they speak. Then later on, he comes to recognize a colour that will be crucial for a lot of the story - the colour of fear in someone's voice.
Creatures known as Timorem come into being through people's fears, augmenting that person's fear till eventually they will consume their host if the person doesn't deal with that fear. This is where an organization, Catharsis, steps in and deals with the Timorem before it eats up their host. And the MC gets dragged into it when he (accidentally?) encounters a Timorem that he, before seeing it in real life, saw in a dream.
I became interested in reading this webtoon because of the cover and title. It's an ongoing series, and I'm always looking forward to seeing more of it.

Oh, I'm reading Catharsis too! I got a bit lost, but it really does interest me. I love that about the webcolour thing too.
The nightmare fule is pretty interesting for sure.
I haven't checked out the other one though. I'll keep an eye out for it

@lego Oh hey you too? Nice XD Yeah, the thing that is confusing me with it at the moment is that it doesn't show how he got the dreams where he was Harvey, or if he gets those kinds of dreams anymore...I hope that gets explained at least. - - - Cheese in the Trap Genre(s):Comedy, Mystery, Romance, School Life, Slice Of Life, Webtoons Author(s):Soon Kki Artist(s):Soon Kki
- - -
Notes: This one I became interested in because of the title and cause it had a female MC this time. When I first read Cheese in the Trap, maybe I read the title too deep because I was always expecting something bad to happen to the MC. But it's not a fantasy, so no big monster was going to crash in on her everyday life, which is the more menacing monster as the story unfolds.
In brief, the story follows the struggles of (Seol Hong?) as she tries to manage her way through school and life situations but seems to be beset over and over again by circumstances what she thinks is all the fault of another student, even though she wants nothing to do with him.
Its a romance, so eventually she comes to get to know this male student better but still suspects him and wants to know the reason behind his actions a year ago.... Yes, the manhwa jumps back and forth between the past and present to explain things. I got thrown off at the start (didn't read the fine print), but figured it out eventually (ahah).
I like this one due to its real life, slice of life, aspect. The interactions between the characters were exciting and there were a lot of "action and resulting consequence" points that were interesting.
A korean drama adaption of it came out recently. I might watch it, but it's faster to read through the manhwa ^^.

The New Gate Genre(s):Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Romance Author(s):Kazanami Shinogi Artist(s):Miwa Yoshiyuki
- - -
Notes: I've been smitten by the what I now consider to be "Game turns into Real World" genre. I picked this one up today on a whim. Something about the title and cover hinted about it being a game-related story (or perhaps because I heard about a game-related anime this season), but I quickly looked into it and found it to be so.
"The New Gate" isn't so much focused on being trapped in a game or being reincarnated into a game. Though at the beginning the manga starts out with the situation of players being unable to log out of the game, it immediately moves on with the main character, a young adult man, defeating a dungeon that allows the players to now exit the game. However just as he is about to log out, something unexpected happens that hinders him from leaving and draws him into the game world 500 years after his last feat.
There's almost 20 chapters out (I got caught off guard again and was left startled at not being about to continue to the next chapter). The main character is presented through his adventure and investigations to discover more about the world and assist the people there as he would have in the game-version of it - while now it seems to be playing in real time for him. Kind of just like in "Tensei ara Slime Datta Ken" the MC, having already leveled himself up, is one of the most respected beings of the world, but it doesn't make him any more arrogant or proud of his status since it was all normal for him when it had been a game.
I'd really like to read more of this. It's been engaging so far in its portrayal of the characters, distribution of information, and art (gotta love the art). The scenario of being in a world that allows your obtain skills and abilities has always intrigued me, cause there's so much you can do in the game-world setting.
Wow, looks like I could talk about this all day <_< hype down Nuyori, hype down....

Oh I heard of that manga! And I've always been looking for a manga to replace the hole that SAO left behind by not reaching its full potential. There was one called Zero no Shiniki that never continued but I kept on looking for more.
I'd love to check that out. I'll see what I think when I catch up to the manga
I read Catharsis too! Thanks for the recommendation. As far as I can see, the author is an english speaker? I find that awesome haha. The style is definitely manga/manhwa and the quality is pretty good, so I find it inspiring in a way. Still, I dunno how many resources and time colouring takes haha...

I took a look at Zero no Shiniki. The scenario and situation seemed to be more intense there.
*facepalm* Oh true. I still have yet to distinguish between webtoons and manhwas. They are both impressive for sure. If I were into digital art more, I feel like I would want to try creating something like that too.
